Crown Cleaners of Watertown, Inc.
Superfund Site
Our team performed groundwater remedial action at the nine-acre Crown Cleaners of Watertown, Inc. Superfund Site in Jefferson County, New York, for U.S. EPA Region 2 under a task order with a final value of approximately $1.1 million. The former industrial dry-cleaning facility was impacted by tetrachloroethene (PCE) released to site soils and groundwater, with groundwater concentrations reported as high as 120,000 micrograms per liter.
The selected site remedy included demolition of the industrial facility, excavation and disposal of PCE contaminated soil, and treatment of contaminated groundwater using in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). KEMRON instituted five rounds of ISCO treatment within the site’s bedrock groundwater plume.
The objective of the groundwater remedial action was to reduce PCE concentrations to 50 µg/L throughout the horizontal and vertical extent of the bedrock groundwater area of concern. Treatment performance was evaluated through groundwater sampling and monitoring following the injection events, with the resulting data used to assess treatment effectiveness and support planning for subsequent injections, if required.
KEMRON’s scope included maintaining project support facilities; preparation of the site-specific Health and Safety Plan and Work Plan; implementation of the oxidant injection program; and maintaining quality assurance and quality control procedures for ISCO treatment. The team also conducted zone-of-influence and injection-system monitoring during system operation to evaluate oxidant distribution and treatment performance.
