Old American Zinc Facility Area Remediation

KEMRON is performing a more than $26 million remedial construction project at the former Old American Zinc Facility in Fairmont City, Illinois, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District. The CERCLA project addresses lead-, arsenic-, zinc-, and chromium-impacted materials associated with the former zinc smelter.

KEMRON’s work includes remediation of approximately 785,300 cubic yards of lead- and zinc-contaminated slag and construction of a 35-acre on-site consolidation cell. The project encompasses clearing and grubbing, excavation and material handling, concrete demolition, stormwater management, containment cell construction, final cover placement, drainage improvements, fencing, and site restoration.

As part of the remedial action, KEMRON will place approximately 855,200 cubic yards of slag and concrete within the consolidation cell, construct the final clay cap, place topsoil, and establish approximately 125 acres of vegetative cover. The work also includes approximately 1,700 linear feet of new drainage infrastructure and 9,000 linear feet of fencing.

KEMRON is using unmanned aerial system drone surveys to track quantities and support project controls. The team has also adapted field operations to address differing site conditions, unmarked utilities, unanticipated materials, and modifications to stormwater drainage features.

Recognized for Superior Safety Performance: KEMRON received the 2024 Superior Safety Performance Certificate of Appreciation from the Mississippi Valley Branch, Associated General Contractors of America, Inc., recognizing the company’s safety performance during remediation of the Old American Zinc Facility project for the St. Louis District.
